Virtual sets in Doctor Who

March 11, 2024

Greenscreen and virtual set shooting for the ‘Doctor Who’ special ‘Wild Blue Yonder’.

This week on the befores & afters podcast, we’re chatting with REALTIME visual effects supervisor James Coore to discuss the 60th anniversary Doctor Who special ‘Wild Blue Yonder’.

REALTIME did a bunch of VFX for the episode, but were also heavily involved in a few virtual production aspects. This included for scenes in a spacecraft corridor, shot on greenscreen but utilizing during the shoot a real-time rendering of the environment by the studio, and a set up from virtual production provider Mo-Sys.

James and I talk about why that virtual production approach came in handy for the show, and we also talk about VFX aspects like making a Jaguar version of David Tenant, blowing up a ship and other effects REALTIME crafted.

Check out the podcast below, plus some behind the scenes featurettes.
