Stranger Things 5 closes out the blockbuster Netflix series with two volumes and a finale. In those episodes, the main characters seek to kill Vecna. Along the way, several skirmishes against Vecna and other creatures—sometimes in other dimensions—ensue, as do encounters with a contingent of the U.S. Military in Hawkins and in the Upside Down. The characters also discover that the Upside Down is not an alternate dimension but a wormhole to another realm. From here they eventually reach the Abyss for a final encounter with Vecna.

As in past seasons of Stranger Things, created by Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, practical and digital effects combined in this final season to realize complex creature work, environmental builds and destruction, and a range of fantastical moments. Visual effects supervisor Betsy Paterson oversaw the VFX effort on the show, leading a bevy of vendors, including Wētā FX, Industrial Light & Magic, Eyeline, The Yard, Rodeo FX, Accenture Song, BigHugFX, Bot VFX and MAS.
