Plus, the incredible on-set puppetry utilized in the show.
Today on the befores & afters podcast, we’re chatting about Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age with Framestore and production side visual effects supervisor Russell Dodgson. We go into a great deal of detail on how this natural history documentary was made, including the shooting side, the use of on-set puppetry (by Practic Creations) and the visual effects work.
Russell has a lot of fun stories about filming in the cold and traveling the world, and especially about what the puppets brought to the series. There’s also some great insights into matching the ‘natural history’ doco look in VFX, and in bringing the creatures to life in naturalistic ways.
