Going behind the scenes on the visual effects of ‘Alien: Romulus’

February 4, 2025

‘Alien: Romulus’ visual effects supervisor Eric Barba about the VFX Oscar nominated film.

Today on the befores & afters podcast, we’re looking at the VFX of Alien: Romulus, with VFX supervisor Eric Barba. This is actually the interview I did with Eric for the print edition of befores & afters magazine. In the chat, we talk about the mix of practical and digital in the film, including the miniatures, the Xenos, Facehuggers, the Offspring, and Rook — and then of course how the digital effects teams, led by ILM and Wētā FX, helped craft many aspects of the film. We also talk about Metaphysic’s machine learning VFX for Rook, which I think is a fascinating aspect of the movie.
