How Wētā FX made that 5400 frame Vermithor dragon oner in ‘House of the Dragon’

September 6, 2024

Plus, behind the scenes of their dragon riding VFX.

Today on the befores & afters podcast, we’re chatting to Wētā FX visual effects supervisor Wayne Stables about his studio’s work on season 2 of House of the Dragon. For this season, Wētā FX completed some stunning creature work with dragons, and with fully digital environment builds. They also worked on a 5400 frame oner in episode seven that sees the dragon Vermithor go crazy inside Dragonmont Cave.

This episode is sponsored by Autodesk University 2024, the Design & Make conference of the year, bringing together innovators in animation, VFX, games, and more to discuss the future of media & entertainment. The digital experience is free, but do you want to know why you should attend AU in person? Yes, you may cross paths with familiar droids from iconic Disney movies in the Expo. You may even unlock the secrets to building a billion-view franchise from SPIRIT Animation Studios. But the real reason…is to rub elbows with other Media & Entertainment leaders sitting beside you. San Diego from October 15 to 17. Register now at autodesk.com/beforesandafters.
