Behind the tests, on-set shoot and CG animation of the characters in ‘IF’

July 8, 2024

A deep dive with Framestore.

Today on the befores & afters podcast, we’re chatting to VFX supervisor Chris Lawrence and animation supervisor Arslan Elver about their work on director John Krasinski’s IF. Chris and Arslan, both from Framestore, go into lots of detail here about the way they brought the many imaginary friends—all CG—into the live-action film. We talk about early tests that were done including with Chris’ son and showing the characters in Framestore’s lobby.

We also venture into what was carried out on set, including things like doing quick LiDAR scans of sets while filming and using that to do almost post-vis frames for the characters. One thing I liked hearing from the guys was about successes and failures as they explored how to complete the scenes. Plus, we discussed their favorite shots and there’s a few fun anecdotes in there from Chris and Arslan.
