Patreon: ‘Tarzan’ turns 25 – a look back at Deep Canvas

June 18, 2024

Kevin Lima and Chris Buck’s Tarzan was released this week 25 years ago. Some of the incredible artistry in the film included the development of a tool called Deep Canvas at Walt Disney Animation Studios as a method to paint 3D geometry in a virtual space, while retaining the ‘2D’ look. It meant that traditional-looking backgrounds could be combined with traditionally drawn characters. This video is a good walk-through of the tech.

Meanwhile, I talked to Lima several years ago for an unpublished book. VFX RETRO EXCLUSIVE patrons get to read the excerpt about Tarzan below. Enjoy!
