Kevin Lima and Chris Buck’s Tarzan was released this week 25 years ago. Some of the incredible artistry in the film included the development of a tool called Deep Canvas at Walt Disney Animation Studios as a method to paint 3D geometry in a virtual space, while retaining the ‘2D’ look. It meant that traditional-looking backgrounds could be combined with traditionally drawn characters. This video is a good walk-through of the tech.
