With ‘Furiousa’ almost here, now is the perfect time. And two newly released reels give a lot of insights.
I’ve often said when George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road was released, it had ‘two’ lives in the cycle of conversation about practical and digital effects.
Audiences were thrilled with the stunts and special effects work in the film, many believing that the majority of shots of were completely practical. And, of course, a crazy high level of real driving, real crashes, real stunts and more were carried out in Namibia and in Australia.
Then, a few weeks after the film was released, more information was released that showcased the impressive way that digital visual effects (overseen by visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson) were added to that practical work by studios including Iloura (now Framestore), an in-house team from Kennedy Miller Mitchell, called Fury FX, along with work by Method Studios and BlackGinger.
Now, with Furiosa releasing this week, Warner Bros. has released a fun reel of test footage and stunt footage from Fury Road.
Also, Framestore has re-released the Iloura VFX reel.
I think it’s really fun to watch both below, and get a picture of how some of the insane sequences came to be.
What a glorious day! Watch the reels below.
