Celebrating the incredible digital visual effects achievements in ‘Barbie’

March 26, 2024

The latest VFX Notes podcast episode with Ian Failes and Hugo Guerra is here!

When Barbie was released (and even before it came out), it very quickly became apparent that the marketing push behind the film was all about the built sets and practical effects. Indeed, that work in the film is incredible. There was even a large miniatures unit that crafted incredible models fitting into the ‘toy’ and ‘play’ aesthetic of the film.

But along the way, the large amount of VFX and virtual production work in the film was heavily downplayed (a familiar tune for a number of films released in 2023). befores & afters was lucky to do some Barbie VFX coverage with Framestore, but it has always been a little strange that the seamless visual effects work has been generally kept quiet.

Luckily, the VFX Notes podcast is here to showcase and celebrate the work. And, yes, we talk about the ‘No CGI’ debate in all of this as well.
