Effects so convincing, Ridley Scott thought they had killed a stunt performer

February 12, 2024

A new befores & afters podcast episode with the VFX team for ‘Napoleon’.

This week on the befores & afters podcast, we’re chatting to the VFX Oscar nominated team behind the visual effects of Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. You’ll hear from production VFX supe Charley Henley, MPC VFX supe Luc-ewen Martin-fenouille, ILM VFX supe Simone Coco and special effects supervisor Neil Corbould.

We look at several aspects of the work, including that stunning opening horse death, then the battles of Austerlitz and Waterloo. Some of the key things there involved the combination of practical and digital; one gag made by Corbould’s team to do huge cannon ball dirt and mud impacts even made Ridley Scott think that they had killed a stunt performer. We also talk about the significant digital effects, including crowd sims from ILM and MPC, and the heavy invisible VFX work…things like candle flames, dogs, birds and even bird droppings.
