Most of the futures we get shown are the ones falling apart. The ruined city, the grim ending, the reason to brace. That is a failure of imagination with real consequences, because the futures we picture are the ones we end up building.
So the Future Vision XPRIZE asked for the other kind. Three minutes. Any tools. No professional experience required. Six thousand people made one.
What they made them with
Live action, animation, generative, or all three inside the same cut. We didn’t restrict the toolset, which means the submissions are a reasonably honest cross-section of what people are actually reaching for right now, and of how far the gap has closed between what a small team can execute and what used to need a facility.
Ten of those films are finalists. They present live on September 25 at a restored 1920s movie palace in downtown Los Angeles. The winner leaves with a $2.5M grant to make the film for real, developed with Range Media Partners, against a budget that can reach $15M. Four runners-up take $100K each. Judging includes Neal Stephenson and Neil deGrasse Tyson.
The same night, a second prize
$2M goes to founders who spent 90 days using AI to solve a problem people actually have, judged by Palmer Luckey, Cathie Wood, Anousheh Ansari, Mark Pincus and Logan Kilpatrick. More than 30,000 people competed across the two prizes.
$5.5M gets decided in the room, on the night, in front of everyone. Nothing is pre-recorded and no envelope was opened in advance.
Why we are telling this audience in particular
Because you will have opinions about the work, and we would rather you formed them by watching the films than by reading about them. Whatever you think about where the tools are going, this is the room where it gets argued out. A lot of you are already in Los Angeles.
