‘Stranger Things 5’ VFX supervisor Betsy Paterson on the show’s landmark moments

Listen in to the podcast.

Today on the befores & afters podcast, we’re taking a look back at Stranger Things season 5. It has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Season.

Now, when I was writing the dedicated befores & afters magazine on this season, I got to speak with production visual effects supervisor Betsy Paterson. We talked in person over Zoom when the first volume of season 5 came out, then we later did an email Q&A for the rest of the season. I thought, with the Emmy nom, that you’d like to hear the audio of our conversation – just about those first 4 episodes.

The big ticket items in those eps relate to the flashback to young Will being chased by a Demogorgon, the Demo attack on Holly’s house, and the final Demo showdown at the military base – this is also where we see a great oner from ILM, and the appearance of Vecna, from Wētā FX. I started chatting with Betsy about the young Will shots – the thing to remember in them is that Will there is a CG Will, crafted by Wētā FX.
