The old-school show-within-a-show in ‘Wonder Man’ used some old-school effects techniques

Including forced perspective miniature effects.

Today on the befores & afters podcast, we’re talking about the visual effects in Wonder Man. I am joined by production visual effects supervisor John Haley. He breaks down the key scenes and sequences in the series where VFX were utilized. This started with the old-school version of Wonder Man that the main character Simon treasures as a child. John shares that they approached the laser blasts and effects here in a fun old-school way, even shooting miniatures and forced perspective shots.

We then look at the various ion fluctuation moments involved Simon, such as the kitchen island smash and the incident at the sound stage. Then we talk about that head punch scene – which is actually a daydream moment – and how that was originally envisaged as something a bit different – really fun story there. This is a really fun chat with John about the role of supporting visual effects, and what’s cool also is that the sole vendor on the show was Base FX, something kind of unusual in this era of VFX (see our previous coverage with Base FX here).

Listen in, above.
