The stuffies and stand-ins behind ‘Lilo & Stitch’

July 8, 2025

Going from animated feature to live-action film.

Today on the befores & afters podcast, we’re chatting about the visual effects of Lilo & Stitch, the live-action film directed by Dean Fleischer Camp. I’m joined by production VFX supervisor Craig Hammack, who also hails from ILM. Craig and I discuss the look and feel arrived at for the film, including the challenges of having the original 2002 animated film to go from.

We talk about the use of stuffies and stand-ins during filming – there’s some great anecdotes in there about what Legacy Effects built. Then we break down the work by lead VFX house ILM, and from other vendors Luma Pictures, MPC and Untold Studios.

Listen in above, and also check out some fun behind the scenes images below.
