Creating alternate versions of reality for ‘Dark Matter’

September 20, 2024

Environments, destruction, twinning and more.

Today on the befores & afters podcast we’re chatting to VFX supervisor John Heller about the Apple TV+ series, Dark Matter. This is a project for which there were more than 1500 visual effects shots created, led by studios including MPC, FOLKS, FuseFX, Digital Domain, Ghost VFX and Papaya VFX. In our chat, John talks about building the many different alternate versions of reality – the worlds – seen in the show. This includes that crazy moment when downtown Chicago seems to implode. We also talk about twinning Joel Edgerton’s character Jason, and building photoreal digi-doubles.
