‘Sky Captain’ turns 20: looking back at filmmaking on the digital backlot

September 17, 2024

DOP Eric Adkins re-visits the groundbreaking film with befores & afters.

Today on the befores & afters podcast, we’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Kerry Conran’s film was years in the making—starting out with a short demo he made on his home computer showcasing robot designs and walk cycles, before enlisting cinematographer Eric Adkins to help him produce a 6 minute demo with live-action bluescreen photography.

It looked like a stylish black and white 1930’s period piece that eventually became a full feature, starring Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie. Importantly, it took advantage of being shot mostly on ’the digital backlot’ — essentially bluescreen sets with only a few props.

To discuss the prep for that shoot, and how it all went down, we talk to DOP Eric Adkins (www.cineLuminous.com). He also shares with us a wealth of images and videos, which you can find below along with the podcast.
