Maximizing Nuke’s CopyCat machine learning tool

July 17, 2024

Harness machine learning in Nuke for free in just 30 days.

Machine learning is on the rise in the world of visual effects, opening up new ways for artists to work more efficiently. This is especially important with projects becoming more complex and production schedules getting tighter all the time.

With its time-saving capabilities, machine learning (ML) is rapidly becoming a key component of VFX pipelines. That’s why at Foundry, we’ve created machine learning toolset CopyCat, designed to help artists save time on more laborious tasks so that they can concentrate on what they love most: being creative.

What is CopyCat?

CopyCat is a key part of Nuke’s suite of machine learning tools. First introduced in Nuke 13.0, CopyCat enables artists to train neural networks to create custom effects for their own image-based tasks.

Whether it’s deblurring out of focus shots, or using CopyCat for time-consuming roto, you can train the network to replicate the effect across similar sequences for whole projects, potentially saving days of work.

CopyCat is constantly evolving

With the ability to share the training load across multiple machines and continue using Nuke while CopyCat runs in the background, Nuke 15.0 brought a useful speed boost. And with multi-resolution training, CopyCat now compresses image resolutions to reduce file sizes, cutting training speeds by up to 50%. And in Nuke 15.1, we made CopyCat even better with an improved UI, making it easier to manage multiple training runs.

Become a CopyCat master

To help get you started, we created the CopyCat Masterclass. Whether you’re a student looking to develop your Nuke skillset, or an experienced compositing artist wanting to explore ML workflows, this free-to-access email course will have you up and running in just one month. With bite-sized lessons delivered straight to your inbox across 30 days, the Masterclass will help you learn how to add machine learning to your compositing tasks for faster results.

Foundry’s Senior Research Engineers, Johanna Barbier and Mairead Grogan, will talk you through everything from choosing the right inputs and training settings, to dealing with common training hurdles.
