The 10th Annual VES NY Celebration and how you can attend

June 13, 2024

A look at the awards, how to grab tickets, and a breakdown of the event with VES NY board chairman Jose L. Marin.

On Thursday, June 27, 2024, the Visual Effects Society NY section will host its 10th Annual VES NY Celebration. It’s all happening at 230 Fifth (Rooftop Bar), 1150 Broadway (between 26th & 27th streets), NYC, between 7pm and 10pm. Below, find out who is being honored and how and where to get tickets to the event, something befores & afters is sponsoring as media for the first time!

What is the VES NY Celebration?

I’m glad you asked. I put in a few questions with Visual Effects Society NY board chairman Jose L. Marin. He notes that “the Visual Effects Society NY Celebration was created by the New York section in 2015 to recognize local members whose work was honored by being nominated or won a Visual Effects Society Award at the main annual Award Show in Los Angeles.”

The Celebration now includes two major awards. The VES NY Empire Award will be presented to Vico Sharabani, director, VFX supervisor, and founder of The-Artery. Meanwhile, Dr. Russ Andersson, creator and developer of Boris FX SynthEyes, will be honored with the VES NY Empire Technology Award.

“Vico Sharabani has a significant professional connection to New York, primarily through his role as the founder and Chief Creative Officer of The-Artery, a renowned creative studio based in Manhattan,” says Marin. “His impact on New York’s visual effects and creative industry is profound, and his work continues to shape the city’s digital media and entertainment landscape. His studio, The-Artery, stands as a testament to his commitment to pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling and creative production.”

Before The-Artery, Sharabani worked at NY post house Rhino to become a highly respected Flame artist. Marin also applauds the work of Dr. Russ Andersson and his development of SynthEyes, the well-known 3D camera tracking software. “SynthEyes has become an essential tool for visual effects professionals in the city, and has facilitated many New York-based projects, allowing artists to achieve intricate and complex visual effects that would be otherwise difficult without his innovations. The VES award reflects his enduring influence and the widespread adoption of his technology by New York’s vibrant visual effects industry.”

How to attend (and win lucky door prizes)!

So, what happens on the night of the Celebration? Marin reveals that, “amidst the lively atmosphere filled with music, top-shelf drinks, and delectable food, don’t miss out on the chance to win exciting door prizes.”

“In addition to celebrating our talented members,” continues Marin, “we’ll shine a spotlight on industry luminaries like Vico Sharabani and Dr. Russ Andersson, whose groundbreaking contributions have shaped New York’s visual effects landscape. It’s an evening of recognition, inspiration, and jubilation that promises to be unforgettable!”

VES member tickets are available for $55 (plus processing fee) from this site. Non-member tickets are $95 (plus processing fee) from Eventbrite. And if you’re looking for more info on the VES NY section, find that here.
