Breaking down the VFX in ‘Discovery’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’

June 3, 2024

Practical and digital effects for the Gorn, virtual production and CG work for the sandrunners, and a look at the Itrinok creatures, and the Breen ship.

Today on the befores & afters podcast, we’re talking to lead visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman about two Star Trek shows: season 2 of Strange New Worlds and season 5 of Discovery.

For Strange New Worlds, we dive into the creature effects for the Gorn. This includes the practical suits made by Legacy Effects, and the digital version of the Gorn done by Ghost VFX. Then for Discovery, we start with the amazing sand runner sequence, including the virtual production side of that shot on Pixomondo’s LED wall stage, and the CG work by Ghost. We also discuss the Itrinok creatures realized by Ghost and an in-house team, and we look at the enormous CG asset made for the virtual production shoot for the Breen ship this season.
