‘Cats’ has reached legendary status in VFX…here’s why.
I loved it. Hugo did not love it. That’s a brief summary of our review of Tom Hooper’s Cats, the latest film we discuss on the VFX Notes podcast. When it was released in 2019, Cats was unfortunately plagued with a sharp backlash against its ‘CGI’ and that meant, amongst other things, no particular coverage of the film’s VFX was done.
Luckily, we delve into the making of the film, the original tests, the mocap, the meticulous matchmoving and body tracking process, and many other aspects of the production, in this episode. We applaud the artists and the intense uphill battle they faced in finishing this film, but we also query filmmaker design choices and the film’s approach to the source material in general.
Come and join the fun, it’s a wild ride.
