How the animatronic baby from ‘The Matrix’ was made

Plus, the practical bug effects, Keanu’s torso and the police officer arm-break effect.

Today on the befores & afters podcast we’re chatting to Paul Katte from Make-up Effects Group about The Matrix. The Matrix is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year so we thought we’d look back at some of MEGFX’s work.

They were responsible for practical effects including the baby seen in one of the pods hooked up with all those tubes, the Neo torso and bug effects when he is pinned down by Agent Smith’s men, and later when the bug is ‘removed’, and a great arm break effect when Trinity takes on the police officer right at the beginning of the film.

With Paul, we go into how each of those gags was made. Plus there’s a few extra fun stories about some moments which didn’t make it into the film. These include the brain synapses lighting tried out for the baby and another arm break moment on the rooftop.

There’s even a fun story about how Paul had to acquire some reference photography of Keanu’s chest for the fake torso.

Check out the podcast below, plus some behind the scenes imagery and video from MEGFX.
