How Eyeline Studios’ new volumetric capture tech was used on ‘Yu Yu Hakusho’

Plus, a look at other creature effects work by Scanline VFX in the show.

This week on the befores & afters podcast, we chat to Ryo Sakaguchi, the production visual effects supervisor for the Japanese Netflix series Yu Yu Hakusho. He also hails from Scanline VFX.

Scanline and its subsidiary Eyeline Studios worked on some very complex characters for the show, including the red character Goki, and the Toguro brothers.

For the Toguro brothers, in particular, one of the tools used here was Eyeline Studios new volumetric capture workflow. This is a setup that enables an actor to perform scenes surrounded by many cameras to capture a 4D scan of them, while also performing in an LED screen stage.

Recently, Eyeline Studios’ team — Stephan Trojansky, Thomas Ganshorn, Oliver Pilarski, Lukas Lepicovsky — won the Emerging Technology Award at the VES Awards for the use of this volumetric capture approach on The Flash.

We go through that approach and we also talk about how Scanline brought some major experience in high end VFX to the Japanese industry for the show, which I think is a really interesting topic.

Listen to the podcast below, plus check out a Scanline behind the scenes video.
