In this special issue of befores & afters magazine, VFX supervisor Charlie Noble breaks down the various visual effects challenges on The Lost Bus. We also talk to visual effects producer Gavin Round, special effects co-ordinator Brandon K. McLaughlin, and to visual effects supervisors from vendors Industrial Light & Magic, beloFX, Cinesite, Outpost VFX and RISE. Those vendors were joined on the production also by Vitality Visual Effects, Mist VFX and Host VFX (which acted as the in-house VFX team). Previs and postvis were led by Proof, with The Third Floor and Halon also contributing. Scanning was carried out by Clear Angle Studios.

Read the mag to learn about several aspects of the visual effects production on The Lost Bus, including the real-time approach to planning the scenes, the practical effects utilized during shooting, the making of ‘Ember-cam’, how smoke plumes were produced, details on specific fiery scenes, and that final breathtaking bus drive through the wildfire.
