VFX recruiter Simon Davies shares his thoughts on the industry, getting back into the industry, and getting a VFX job in general.
Today on the befores & afters podcast, we’re chatting to VFX recruiter Simon Davies. Simon has just started the Digital Arts Xchange, or DAX, with colleague Julian Connor. DAX is a specialist recruitment consultancy for the creative tech sector. Simon has previously worked at VFX studios like ILM and Scanline, and games company King.
I thought it would be interesting to chat to Simon right now while the industry is in one of its trickiest positions in recent memory. It’s something that has impacted so many artists, and of course even Simon himself. In our chat, Simon shares some advice for artists right now looking to get back into the industry, and about getting a VFX job generally.

This episode is sponsored by Autodesk University 2024, the Design & Make conference of the year, bringing together innovators in animation, VFX, games, and more to discuss the future of media & entertainment. The digital experience is free, but do you want to know why you should attend AU in person? Yes, you may cross paths with familiar droids from iconic Disney movies in the Expo. You may even unlock the secrets to building a billion-view franchise from SPIRIT Animation Studios. But the real reason…is to rub elbows with other Media & Entertainment leaders sitting beside you. San Diego from October 15 to 17. Register now at autodesk.com/beforesandafters.
