How those nuclear explosions were made for ‘Fallout’

June 24, 2024

Breaking down the nukes with RISE, as well as wasteland environments, vertibirds and battle shots.

Today on the befores & afters podcast, we’re chatting to RISE visual effects supervisor Andreas Giesen about the Amazon Prime Video series, Fallout. RISE was responsible for a large proportion of the VFX on the show, including that opening LA nuke sequence, scenes of Shady Sands, many environments in the wasteland, flying scenes with vertibirds and the final Griffith Park Observatory battle. With Andreas, we talk about the approach in particular to building a city and blowing it up. And we dive into some of tools used to add so much detail to the assets and explosions along the way.
