Yeti creator Colin Doncaster on the challenges of VFX software development

April 8, 2024

A breakdown of Doncaster’s career at VFX studios, in deep compositing, and the development of Yeti and Bokeh.

This week on the befores & afters podcast we’re talking to Colin Doncaster, who is the founder of Peregrine Labs, which makes Yeti. That tool, of course, is used to create fur, feathers and other procedural geometry. It recently had a 5.0 release, so I thought it would be fun to talk to Colin about how Yeti got there.

Along the way, we dive deep into Colin’s own history in VFX, which included working at Weta, Electronic Arts, Peerless Camera, Core, RSP, Animal Logic and Storm Studios.

We also discuss his SciTech award relating to deep compositing, and finally we cover bokeh, which is now part of Foundry’s family of VFX tools.

This is a really fun chat that goes into a lot of detail on the trials and tribulations of VFX software development, including technical, financial and legal challenges something I don’t always get to discuss here at befores & afters.

Find the podcast, below, plus some Yeti projects, and the SciTech awards ceremony.
