What you didn’t know about how that helicopter rescue in ‘The Matrix’ was filmed

April 1, 2024

Getting in trouble for buzzing a Bell 212 helicopter near the Attorney-General’s Department building in Sydney on a weekend was one memorable moment.

This week on the befores & afters podcast, we’re chatting to Bruce Hunt, who was the second unit director on The Matrix. That incredible film is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Bruce was responsible for many different aspects within the second unit shoot, often interacting with visual effects. What we talk about here, in particular, is the helicopter rescue and crash — that moment when Trinity flies the chopper off the roof, with Neo rescuing Morpheus, seeing them fly around the buildings – which was actually shot in Sydney – and then eventually crashing.

Just a stunning sequence that made use of a real chopper and stunt performers, sound stage shooting and even a miniature for the crash.

Bruce shares a lot of fun details here from the shoot, including a couple of times he got into trouble filming a Bell 212 helicopter around a building that I actually happened to work in, believe it or not, plus the down to the wire filming of the chopper miniature crash.

Listen in, below, and then see some fun behind the scenes from Bruce and other sources.
